port of Diego Suarez in Madagascar from the Vichy French. In the next

Dieppe Raid 19 August 1942 British,
Canadian and American ground troops assault Dieppe by sea. First Americans in ground combat
in Europe. The Windsor Star (Windsor, Ontario Province, Canada), August 19,1992. Allied troops
landed on six beaches, four at Dieppe and one on each flank. The Dieppe
Raid was planned by Vice-Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten, left. and, in the initial stages, Lieutenant-General Bernard
Law Montgomery, right. Mountbatten was Chief of Combined Operations, which planned the earlier successful raids on Bruneval
(Feb. 1942) and St. Nazaire (Mar. 1942). The soldiers
for the Dieppe Raid were from Montgomery's army in southeast England. Eventually,
Montgomery, before leaving England on 12 August for a new assignment in Egypt, advised dropping

The last German offensive Alam El Halfa 30 Aug. - 5 Sept. 1942 Stopped by the Eighth Army The Battle of Alam El Halfa Rommel planned
to encircle British troops at El Alamein and cut their supply line. His tanks swung south around the British defensive line while
infantry units attacked its centre. The tanks drove through mine fields and endured aerial attacks and got around
the British line but they were stopped by fire before Alam El Halfa in the north. The Germans
withdrew. The British did not pursue, content, for
the present, with beating off the attack. The Germans returned to their defensive positions, as before the attack, facing the British, and waited for
the British offensive. Rommel, ill, flew back to Germany to rest. The German Führer, Adolf Hitler, met Rommel in Berlin on 1 October and promoted him to Feldmarschall.
