Cuba Inhabited by Taino Indians (Arawak),
who inhabited most of the Caribbean, the island was claimed for Spain by Chrisopher Columbus in 1492. The origin of the name
Cuba is unclear. It may be Taino. Some believe it is Poruguese. Spain colonised the island and
brought many slaves from Africa. The colonists fished; grew sugar cane, tobacco and citrus; and raised cattle. Spanish
missionairies introduced the natives to Catholicism. In the 1800s many Chinese, Indian and Malay laborers were brought in
from Asia. In the 1800s Spanish colonists
rebelled against Spanish rule. Jose Marti is the best known of the Cubans who fought for independence from Spain. Marti was
killed in fighting Spanish soldiers in 1895. The U. S. sent a battleship,
the U. S. S. Maine, to Cuba to protect American
interests in 1898. While docked in Havana, the ship exploded, killing 266 of the crew. Some Americans accused the
Spanish of sabotage. The U. S. government demanded
Cuba from Spain. American troops were sent to Cuba and,
joined by Cuban rebels, fought Spanish troops for three
months, until the Spanish agreed in August 1898. At the same time, American forces
backed Filipino rebels against Spanish rule in the Philippines. In the Treaty of Paris of 1898, the Spanish gave up Cuba
and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean and the Philippines and Guam in the Pacific to the U. S. American troops occupied Cuba for three years, until 1902, when
the U. S. granted Cuba independence. The U. S. kept a small piece of Cuba in Guantanamo Bay for an
American naval base, by a lease without a date of expiration. A Cuban president was democratically elected in 1902. The US occupied the island again to protect American interests
during rebellions from 1906 to 1909. Cuban presidents were democratically elected from 1908 until
1933, when the government was ousted in a revolt led by Fulgencio Batista. Batista headed the government. In 1940, Batista
was elected president, limited by law to one term, and retired in 1944. Batista ran for president again in 1952. Fearing defeat, he overthrew
the goverment in a military coup and headed the government again. Among the opponents of Batista's dictatorship was Fidel Castro,
a young lawyer, who led a small army of rebels in the Sierra Maestra. Batista's troops were defeated in a battle in the city
of Santa Clara by Castro's rebels led by an Argentine revolutionary, Che Guevara, in December 1958. Batista fled Cuba
and revolutionaries took over Havana.

Johansson won the silver medal in the heavyweight division in the 1952 Olympic Games
in Helsinki, Finland. In his home town of Gothenberg in 1958, Johansson knocked out the top contender for
the chamionship title, American boxer Eddie Machen, in the first round. On June 26, 1959, Johansson, the top contender, a 5 - 1 underdog, challenged the
champion, Floyd Patterson, in Yankee Stadium in New York. Patterson won the gold medal in the middleweight division in the Olympic Games in Helsinki
in 1952. Patterson turned pro and won the vacant heavyweight championship title in 1956
at age 21, the youngest ever to win the title. Patterson defended the title four times before meeting Johansson. June 26, 1959 Johansson knocked Patterson down seven times in the third
round before the referee stopped the fight. Johansson was the new world champion. Johansson was the first world heavyweight boxing champion from outside the U. S. in

The

knocked Johansson down twice in the fifth round. The

Kwok Hotel in Hong Kong in the early 1940s, during the Japanese occupation of the British colony. A British author, Richard Mason (1919 –1997), picked up the story
and wrote The World of Suzie Wong, a novel published in 1957. The book was a best-seller. The book was adapted to a Broadway

was the first to regain the heavyweight championship. Now Patterson had to fight the number one contender, Sonny Liston.
But there was a clause in the Patterson-Johansson
contract. If Johansson lost, Patterson had to give him a rematch. So, there was yet a third Patterson-Johansson fight,
in the next year, 1961, in Miami. Liston had to wait. Training in Miami, Ingemar

Agreement The Deal The Soviet Union agreed to remove all of its nuclear missiles
from Cuba. The U. S. agreed not to invade Cuba and to remove all of
its nuclear missiles from Italy and Turkey. Initially, Khrushchev agreed to withdraw Soviet missiles
from Cuba in exchange for Kennedy's promise not to invade Cuba. But then Khrushchev added another condition. He asked Kennedy to withdraw U. S. missiles from Turkey. Kennedy agreed but insisted that the agreement would have
to be kept secret. Khrushchev agreed. But the agreement was never
a secret. From the start of the crisis many expected such a deal would have to be made. When it was, Russians were told
